“We can’t thank you enough for your support. You have gone above and beyond. I really can’t tell you how much that means.”
-Young Adult
The Young Adult Building was opened in 2021 after a generous donation from The Denise Coates Foundation.
The building is welcoming and designed with the opinions of our young adults in mind who told us they wanted space and independence.
The design and themes were all decided by our young people, who took part in workshops and focus groups and created mood-boards with their ideas. They were very clear that they wanted a modern, cool, “student” feel.
The main activity area has lots of space to accommodate wheelchairs and other equipment; the furniture is modular so that it can be easily moved around. There is a huge TV on the wall which is essential for gaming, Karaoke, Makaton signing sessions and cinema nights. The fitted kitchen is a space for young adults to both experience the sensory benefits of cooking and baking and to learn independent living skills. The work bench, cooker and sink can all be adjusted to ensure full access to the kitchen area. The impressive window wall opens to provide full access to our private and accessible outdoor space.
On the upper floor there are five spacious bedrooms, each with access to an en-suite bathroom. One of the bedrooms is designed to accommodate two beds should young adults wish to have a ‘sleepover’ with a friend. Whilst the young adults still have one to one support if required, the bedrooms have a more independent feel with facilities including mood lighting, a shaving point, individual lockable medicine cabinets, a rise and fall sink and TV.
Our therapy room gives our young adults the opportunity to experience various Complementary Therapies from a registered practitioner. The space can also be used for pamper sessions including hair, nails and make-up or as a quiet area away from the hustle and bustle of the main activity area.
We have an amazing sensory room, designed for us in May 2022 and fitted with a range of equipment including bubble tubes, fibre optic lights, a vibrating plinth and a colour changing bubble wall. The room can be set up to meet the individual sensory needs of our young adults, enabling them to interact according to their ability and enjoy a true multi-sensory experience.
The Garden Room is located in our Children’s Services Building; a private suite of rooms where families can spend time saying goodbye after a young a person has died. It is a comfortable and private space with lounge, kitchen, bathroom and two bedrooms. The Garden Room is available for use regardless of where a young person has died.
We offer a variety of activities both ‘in-house’ and in the local and wider community; each young person (or their carer) is invited to contribute to the planning of their own person centred activity plan; we will always aim to ensure we have something for everyone, no matter what their interests or ability. Some of our most popular and regular activities include baking, music, day trips, Makaton and quizzing (including a regular team at the local pub quiz) ….. and we are always up for a party, no matter what the occasion! The social aspect of the service is one of the most important, allowing opportunities to make and spend time with friends and to experience independence as young adults.
We accept referrals from any area provided the young adult can organise their own travel to the hospice.
A family member, family friend or a professional or of course you can refer yourself. We do ask that the family has given their permission to be referred. We’ll welcome new referrals from young people aged 18-30 and we’re happy to receive referrals by telephone, letter or e-mail.
No, while a lot of our care is given within the hospice, we also work out in the community and often spend time in a family’s own home. This means we’re able to provide flexible care and support to meet their particular needs.
No, we offer care and support to young people with a variety of life-limiting and life-threatening conditions, which may be as a result of illness or injury. This includes metabolic conditions, Epilepsy, Muscular Dystrophy, heart conditions, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Cerebral Palsy and associated problems as well as benign brain tumours (Neurofibromatosis).
Unfortunately we don't have an answer for that question here.
