£6,500 Lottery Jackpot Winner shocked after scooping top prize

When Dougie Mac’s Head of Lottery, Jane, called Terry to tell him he was the lucky winner of our £6,500 Lottery jackpot, he just couldn’t believe it.

“We were on our way home from a week in Anglesey when my phone rang and I was driving so my wife, Sheri, took the call and put my phone onto loudspeaker. There was loads of cheering in the background as the whole Lottery team had gathered for the call – we were both stunned. Sheri asked Jane to repeat what she’d said because we just couldn’t believe it.

“I’ve always been a bit of a prankster and we thought someone was getting their own back on me, so when we got to Chester services we pulled over and I rang Jane back to check it was real. When she explained I’d won the jackpot, I was expecting it to be about £500, so when she said it was £6,500 it was a big shock. I still can’t quite believe it even now I’m here collecting my cheque.”

Terry has a strong connection to Dougie Mac as he’s been a much-valued volunteer for more than 15 years. Every Wednesday he gives up his morning to work in the kitchen, preparing lunches for patients and staff.

“When I retired from work, I wanted something to fill my time, so Sheri suggested volunteering for Dougie Mac. I initially asked about helping in the gardens, but as it was winter there wasn’t much to do, so when I mentioned that I enjoyed cooking, they suggested working in the kitchen instead – that was almost 15 years ago.

“They call me ‘the deli man’ in the kitchen team as I always prepare the sandwich fillers. I absolutely love volunteering and the team are always so lovely to me, they’re so grateful for my help and always say thank you before I leave.”

Terry joined Dougie Mac’s Lottery three years ago but had only won £10 until now. However, he explained how the numbers and the date of the prize draw have a strange significance for him;

“It’s strange but the numbers 5 and 6 have always followed me throughout my life – I met Sheri on 5th June, we married on 25th, we once lived in a house that was number 265 and I’ve had phone numbers which have ended with 5s and 6s. Plus when we go our for meals, we’re often given tables 5 or 6. It’s always been really strange. I then realised the Dougie Mac Jackpot draw was on 6th September and the amount I’ve won is £6,500 – so the 5s and 6s have followed me again – they’re obviously my lucky numbers!”
