Our Commitment

At Dougie Mac Hospice, we are committed to operating with the highest standards of environmental stewardship, social responsibility and corporate governance. Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles are central to everything we do, helping us embed responsible, sustainable and inclusive practices across our organisation and ensuring that our decisions support the people we care for, our colleagues, our communities and the environment.

Building on the strong foundations established in 2023, we have continued to integrate sustainability across our operations, measure our environmental impact and define clear ambitions across all three ESG pillars. Our ESG framework dials provide the basis for this approach, supporting our ambition to be a Centre of Excellence.

Environmental

Our Environmental Impact

Our environmental responsibility means taking practical steps to reduce our impact on the planet across everything we do.

Driving Change

We are committed to:

-using resources such as water, energy and paper responsibly

-reducing waste through recycling and proper disposal

-choosing more sustainable products and services wherever possible

We also work to:

-lower our carbon emissions by improving energy efficiency

-encourage greener travel options for staff

-explore renewable energy opportunities, e.g more sustainable use of our hospice vehicle fleet.

Social

Our Social Responsibility

Our social responsibility means putting people at the heart of everything we do and we’re committed to making a positive social impact in our local communities.

Our Impact

Through our services, we embed three social principles: community and inclusion, quality and safety, and people and engagement.

We are committed to providing compassionate, patient-centred care that respects the dignity, individuality and choices of patients, service users, carers and families, while supporting their mental and physical wellbeing through an holistic approach.

We also promote a diverse and inclusive environment where everyone is treated with respect. We actively work with our communities through partnerships, volunteering, and support the health, safety and development of our employees so they can thrive in their roles.

Governance

Governance - Accountability and Transparency

We are proud of the strong governance across all areas of the hospice.

Our established committee structures provide clear oversight and accountability, meeting regularly to review progress, manage risk and guide strategic decision making.

Our ESG Working Group

The hospice ESG Group continues to guide our practices and develop an operational plan that supports team education, responsible evolution, meaningful measurement, celebration of progress, and meeting the needs of our community and environment in the years ahead.

Looking ahead

Dougie Mac is committed to building on the progress already made. Over the next phase, our priorities include:

-Working towards the Bronze Greener Palliative Care Award
-Developing a comprehensive ESG dashboard to set measurable goals and report transparently
-Evolving Environmental and Social champions to suggest and monitor initiatives
-Reducing Carbon Emissions, completing a carbon footprint assessment (ESOS) to guide future sustainability actions
-Strengthening our Investors in Excellence framework, to support the delivery of our strategic priorities across the organisation
-Continuing to enhance staff wellbeing and development with new initiatives
