Margaret’s Story

When Peter was diagnosed with dementia in 2017, I felt alone and struggled with how best to support him.

After two challenging years, we were referred to Dougie Mac’s Admiral Nurse Team. They invested time in getting to know us and provided emotional and practical advice that helped us navigate some really difficult times. For the first time since Peter’s diagnosis we were treated as people – not just another statistic.

We were later invited to attend the Dementia Wellbeing Sessions every Friday which were like a ray of sunshine at the end of a cloudy week. Everyone was so welcoming and we made some really great friends who I’m still in touch with today.

Chatting to others who understood what I was going through was a huge benefit to me. Peter also enjoyed the varied programme of activities including music, aromatherapy and physio sessions which helped him to relax. We felt so uplifted and in a much better place when we left.

Dougie Mac’s support has been a lifeline over the years and they remained by our side right up until Peter died in October 2021.
