Meet Melanie and Keith

Melanie and Keith Patterson describe the support they have received from Dougie Mac as ‘absolutely amazing’.

Since Keith, 78, was diagnosed with early onset dementia in February, the couple have benefited from both emotional support and practical help.

Melanie said: “I thought there was something ‘different’ with Keith as I was staring to notice changes in him, small changes that no-one else would notice such as forgetting things.

“We went to the GP and Keith was referred for a memory test and later a brain scan. He was diagnosed with the early stages of Alzheimer’s and dementia. We started to attend a couple of groups run by Dougie Mac Dementia Services – such as a carer’s group and a singing group – and the support we have received has been amazing.

“We are just normal people but by going to the groups, I am understanding what is happening to Keith as it gives me an insight into the different stages of Alzheimer’s and dementia and what may happen. Now, when I see different things Keith does, I realise that’s exactly what Dougie Mac said.

“As well as the emotional support and the groups, Dougie Mac has also helped us with lots of other things including helping us filling in forms to receive Attendance Allowance and a Blue Badge too. The paperwork for that is a minefield so to have had that help from Dougie Mac has been really good.

“I know that if I need help or advice, I can pick up the phone and call Dougie Mac Dementia Services for help, advice and support – it’s like someone is there holding your hand the whole journey. Life can be really challenging every day so to have that help is great.”

The couple also attend a weekly singing session at St Luke’s Church in Clayton, where they can enjoy mixing with other people in a similar situation.

Keith said: “One thing I have learnt is that you aren’t on your own. There’s support throughout this journey and it’s good to mix with people in the same boat as me. When Melanie suggested we attend the singing sessions run by Dougie Mac, I really did not want to attend but I must admit I really do enjoy it.

“Having Dougie Mac Dementia Services by my side feels like a great weight has been lifted off my shoulders. It’s good to be with people and have a laugh and a singalong with other people in a similar situation.”

Melanie said: “When we first came, Keith said to me ‘why have you brought me here?’ and then suddenly, he picked a song, got the microphone and started singing. He was in his own little world and loved it. Now he enjoys coming every week.

“The group is amazing, because there are people who are very quiet when they come in, but as soon as the music starts those same people are like little flowers opening up – it’s amazing to see the power of music helping people.

“Also, for me, going to the group is actually a treat. Keith can’t really make me a drink at home anymore, so when I go to the group, there is always someone who makes me a drink and offers a biscuit meaning I can relax. No-one is judging and the singing is infectious – we really enjoy it!”
