Vicky’s Story

In December 2020, after 2 years in remission; we learnt that Matthew’s Glioblastoma brain tumour had returned and palliative care was the only treatment option.

We were referred to Dougie Mac where Matthew chose to receive care at home. Our amazing Nurse respected and enabled Matthew’s wishes as well as gently guiding me along the hardest journey I hoped I’d never have to make.

Talking to our two young children about Matthew’s illness was incredibly difficult but Dougie Mac gave valuable advice and encouraged us to create family memory boxes which our children will now treasure forever.

Before Matthew’s illness, he loved going for long family walks. We never thought we’d be able to enjoy that again but with Dougie Mac’s offer of a wheelchair, we were able to head to the countryside and make special memories together.

Matthew died in March 2021 aged 41. At a time when I felt like our world was falling apart, Dougie Mac were there for us every step of the way.

The hospice will always hold a special place in our hearts and we are so grateful for the excellent care Matthew received.
